Built on Midnight, explained honestly

How CarrierMSG uses Midnight

Midnight is a blockchain built for privacy: it can check that something is true without seeing the details. Here’s what we use it for, what’s next, and what never goes near a blockchain.

The plain truth: nothing CarrierMSG runs is on a Midnight chain yet, no real money has moved, and Midnight’s main network stays locked for us until our independent security audit.

Three layers, kept apart

  1. Never on a blockchain

    Your conversations

Locked with the Signal Protocol and carried by Lofts. Nothing about your chats is written to any ledger.

    • Messages
    • Groups
    • Communities
    • Calls
    • Updates
    • Contacts
    • AI hosts
  2. Proofs, not paperwork

    Proving things without showing them

Your phone proves you’re 18+ without handing over your passport. Usernames, badges and verification levels are run by CarrierMSG’s servers today; moving them onto Midnight is planned.

    • 18+ check
    • Usernames
    • Badges
    • Verification levels
  3. Midnight test network

    Your wallet

A self-custody wallet in test builds: your keys stay on your phone. Test tokens only, no real value.

    • tNIGHT
    • DUST
    • Shielded
    • Unshielded

Shielded vs unshielded

Every payment on Midnight is one of two kinds. Here’s what the whole world can see for each.

The public record

Amount
25 tNIGHT

Valid

Like a postcard: anyone can read who paid whom and how much. NIGHT, Midnight’s main token, is always public.

Built, not live yet

Screens recreated from the CarrierMSG app’s Test wallet (wallet test builds only). Illustrative amounts: no payment has gone live yet.

DUST: the fee battery

Network fees are paid in DUST, which recharges on its own from the NIGHT you hold. You never buy or send it, and chatting never uses it.

Planned: a CarrierMSG Treasury will cover fees for founding members and Loft keepers on the test network. Not started yet.

The 18+ check: proof, not a photocopy

Your phone reads your passport and proves you’re over 18 with ZKPassport’s own zero-knowledge proofs, plus a face match. Our server checks the proof.

We keep: “over 18”, the date, and a code that stops one passport opening many accounts.

Never shared:

  • Name
  • Birth date
  • Nationality
  • Document number
  • Photos

This runs on ZKPassport, not Midnight, and is still being tested. A private 18+ proof on Midnight is planned.

Where each piece stands

Today, in test builds

  • Self-custody wallet: 24 words, keys stay on your phone
  • Test NIGHT balance and the DUST battery
  • Proofs made on your phone, never on someone else’s Loft

Built, not live yet

  • Public test payments, paying in a chat, splitting a bill
  • Shielded payments (being built)
  • Test Dollar and 18+ contracts, not deployed

Planned

  • A private 18+ proof on Midnight
  • Usernames, badges and verification levels on Midnight
  • Treasury-sponsored fees
  • Midnight’s main network, only after the independent audit

The wallet is only in test builds (the direct-download Android app and internal iPhone tests), not in the Google Play or public TestFlight versions.
